India is among one of the fastest growing economies in the world, and with a burgeoning population it faces an acute supply-demand gap in meeting the country’s growing energy needs.
With the 12th 5-Year Plan in place and with an urgent demand for clean energy, both solar and wind power generation are set for exponential growth. But with increased regulations, PPA challenges, and the high cost of equipment and plant operation, the renewable energy business in India also faces a number of challenges.
With the Indian economy still growing and industrial production in full swing, statistical reports from McKinsey suggest that the country’s power demand will reach an astounding 3,15,000 MW by 2017 – over a 150% increase in the current demand level. With this growing demand comes great opportunities for power companies to increase their market presence and profits. However, with power losses and outages still an enormous problem in India , there remain many equipment and infrastructure challenges that must be overcome in order to capitalise on the opportunities ahead…
