Country to achieve renewable energy target: CERC
The country is on its way to achieve to generate 10 per cent of total electricity from renewable sources set under the National Action Plan on Climate Change, observed chairman of the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC)
CERC has conducted a study to assess the supply scenario based on stakeholder consultation and the study revealed that the supply from renewable energy sources will exceed 47,720 Mw and solar alone will provide 4,000 Mw.
Speaking at the ninth edition of Green Power organized by CII Deo said, “Considering the infirm nature of generation and difficulties in scheduling, there is a need to promote smart grid technologies and biomass and solar with storage facilities.”
He added that the government is supporting the solar industry by offering a generation-based incentive to help the industry meet the National Solar Mission target of 20 GW by 2022. Giving an overview of the renewable industry, Deo said that India has the total installed capacity of 1,61,352 Mw as on May 2010, wherein the total installed capacity of renewable energy is about 10 per cent (17,222 Mw). However, currently renewable energy contributes just 4 per cent of total power generation.

To generate 10% from renewable, India will have to create more than 20% of capacity ( due to low CUF in wind, solar etc.) At current level of 161 GW this means 32GW. With 7% annual growth power capacity in 10 years will jump to 340GW. 20% FROM RE will mean 76GW !!Huge,is it not? Our pace is slow.
Colleges will play a huge role in our future energy endeavors as a country. It’s very important that our universities contine to train students for a greener future
