Anand Kumar, Director R & D, Indian Oil Coporation 

Oil shale is fine-grained, sedimentary rock that contains large amounts of organic matter, which yields substantial amount of oil when subjected to destructive distillation or pyrolysis. Kerogen is the high molecular weight, three-dimensional polymeric matrix of organic compounds, from which hydrocarbons are produced with increasing temperature and pressure. The synthetic oil, which is obtained by destructive distillation of oil shale, is known as shale oil.

Oil shales are widely distributed around the world – more than 600 deposits are known, with proved resources of the associated shale oil totaling almost 500 billion tonnes or approximately 3.2 trillion barrels. Two-thirds of the world’s oil shale resources are located in North America. By far the largest single oil shale deposit is the Green River Formation in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. This deposit contains estimated reserves of 1.47 trillion barrels.

According to the BP Statistical Review of World Energy 2007, estimates of recoverable conventional oil resources amount to 1.2 trillion barrels. Considering the present annual global consumption of 31 billion barrels, these resources can supply the world’s needs for only roughly 40 years at current level of consumption. In the later half of this century, oil sands and shale oil are expected to play a dominant role in the supply of oil.

Estimates of the global volume of potential shale oil range from 530 to 1,430 billion tonnes (Põlevkivi – Õlikivi, Oil Shale – Source of Oil, Vello Kattai, Tallinn 2003). To put this in perspective, this is 3–9 times as much as the current proven conventional oil reserves. 

US estimates that shale oil could provide a long-term source of reliable, affordable and secure oil and could yield enough oil to meet US demand at current levels for more than 250 years. The American Energy Security (AES) study shows that the US can eliminate dependence on oil imports entirely by 2030 and recommends a plan on the future role to be played by non-petroleum energy sources including shale oil found in America to replace approximately five percent of imported oil each year for 20 years, beginning in 2010 as shown in the following figure.

 According to a survey conducted by the Rand Corporation, cost of producing a barrel of oil in US would range between  US $ 70–95. This estimate takes into account the varying levels of kerogen quality and extraction efficiency. The analysis also discusses the expectation that processing costs would drop to US $35–48 per barrel within 12 years and further to US $30–40 per barrel.

In India, shale oil occurs in association with coal in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The coal-shale unit occurs as outcrops towards south of the oil fields in a region called Belt of Schuppen. The area, close to the Digboi refinery is thickly forested and difficult to access. The shale oil reserves in Assam are estimated at 137 billion tonnes with a recovery factor of 10-20 per cent. Currently, coal mining is actively pursued in this area. The associated shale is dumped as waste.

Although the presence of shale oil is known, exact position, thickness and extent of the horizons are not known. Systematic exploration, sampling and analysis in potential areas are required. We also need to explore possibility of getting shale oil produced from some existing facilities for detailed characterisation and feasibility studies for processing and assessing processing capabilities. This step is important for economic feasibility as quality of oil will help in assigning a value to the produced oil. DGH has taken lead in studies related to oil shale and has been coordinating with different agencies like Bureau de recherches géologiques et minières (BRGM), France and Mineral Exploration Corporation Ltd. (MECL) Nagpur for exploration mapping etc. Indian Oil R&D has collaborated with DGH for joint studies for oil shale. As per the MOU, IndianOil R&D will carry out detailed characterization of shale oil, and assess its feasibility for further processing.

It took 40-50 years for developing appropriate technology for exploring oil and its conversion into useful products. It will certainly not take less number of years for reaching maturity level in development of eco-friendly and sustainable technologies for exploring huge reserves of Oil sands and Shale Oil. For India, it is the right time to start R&D and investment in exploitation of Oil shale resources and explore options of collaborations with established players.
