Tata Power looking for stakes in overseas coal mines

Country’s largest private sector power producer Tata Power is looking for strategic stake in the Indonesian or South African coal mines for its 1,600 Mw supercritical thermal power project at Shahpur in Raigad district of Maharashtra.

“The project will need around six to eight million tonnes (mt) of coal per anum, so we are not looking for buying entire coal mine but based on the size of mine we will acquire strategic stake,”  said company’s  executive director S Padmanabhan. The company has a 30 per cent stake in KPC mine in Indonesia that will supply 12 to 14 mt  coal to its 4000 Mw, Mundra Ultra Mega Power Project.  The Indonesian mine produces 55-60 million tonnes of coal annually.

The company requires 1,000 acres of land for this Rs 9,000 crore project and project got boost recently after more than 60 per cent of the owners given their consent for land acquisition for the project.
